Children's Liturgy of the Word.
“I like going to Children’s
Liturgy because after the readings we do an activity about
the Gospel. It is also good because smaller children who don’t
understand the big words can have a simpler reading at liturgy.”
“In Children’s Liturgy I like
the bits where we sing the Clapping Gloria and when we do
an activity like colouring, puzzles, planting seeds, games
and other things like that. I also like it how the readings
are made easier so that we can understand. We then get to
answer questions about what is said.” |

At the 10 o’clock Sunday Mass we include the Children’s
Liturgy of the Word for children of primary school age. Younger
children with an accompanying parent often join us. We have Children’s
Liturgy of the Word whenever possible during the year, generally
on the Sundays during school term times.
A volunteer is called by Father, at the introduction of the Mass,
to receive the Children’s Lectionary and then we process to
the Parish centre for our Liturgy of the Word. We rejoin the congregation
at the Offertory procession when the children take the gifts to
the altar.
In Children’s Liturgy of the Word:
We follow the same Mass as the rest of the congregation.
We have a Penitential rite and/or the Gloria dependent on the
Liturgical season.
We have the readings of the day, although we do not have all
of them.
As in church the highlight of our Liturgy is the reading of the
Gospel.
Our readings are simplified to enable children to follow them
more easily.
After the readings we explore the theme by discussion, drama
or art work.
One ‘side-effect’ of Children’s Liturgy is that
it is quieter in Church for the Liturgy of the Word however we are
anxious to stress that; Children’s Liturgy of the Word is
not a crèche, is not compulsory, is not Sunday school.
We hope that it is enjoyable and that it helps children feel involved
in the Mass at their level to enable them when older to follow the
Liturgy in church. |
